Empowering Youth in Uganda’s Extractive Industries
As Uganda continues to discover and develop its rich deposits of petroleum and other minerals, the extractive industries sector presents both significant opportunities and challenges for the nation’s youth. At Recreation for Development and Peace Uganda (RDP Uganda), we are dedicated to ensuring that young people can effectively engage with and benefit from this burgeoning sector.

Tapping into Opportunities
The extractive sector, especially in Oil and Gas, offers vast potential for employment and economic growth. With over 1.5 million barrels of recoverable oil and investments projected to reach $25 billion, it is crucial that young people are well-positioned to take advantage of these opportunities. RDP Uganda focuses on creating pathways for youth to enter the extractive industries, whether through employment, entrepreneurship, or subcontracting.
Capacity Building
We work closely with both public and private sector entities to build the capacity of young people. This includes training programs that provide the necessary skills for jobs in the extractive sector, from technical skills to business acumen. By equipping youth with the knowledge and expertise required, we aim to make them reliable suppliers of both skilled and unskilled labor, food items, and other services.
Environmental Stewardship
While the extractive industries offer economic opportunities, they also pose environmental risks. RDP Uganda is committed to promoting climate-smart actions and mitigating the adverse effects of extractive activities. We educate youth on sustainable practices and advocate for policies that protect communities and the environment.
Advocacy and Affirmative Action
RDP Uganda advocates for affirmative action policies that prioritize youth involvement in the extractive sector. We work to ensure that youth, especially those from regions affected by extractive activities, receive fair access to opportunities. Our advocacy efforts also focus on increasing transparency and accountability within the industry to safeguard the interests of young people.
